Leontopodium nivale, commonly called edelweiss (Edelweiß), a compound of edel "noble" and weiß "white". The scientific name is a latinisation of the Greek leontopódion, "lion's paw". According to folk tradition, giving this flower to a loved one is a promise of dedication.
