Vor kurzem hatten wir die Freude, im deutschen Fernsehen Ihren Film «Eine unbequeme Wahrheit» zu sehen. Die darin enthaltenen Informationen bezüglich Ursache und Wirkung der globalen Erwärmung erachten wir als sehr wertvoll, wie auch die dort gegebenen Anregungen, wie wir als globale Gemeinschaft zur Lösung dieses Problems – durch die Entwicklung und Förderung nachhaltiger bzw. umweltverträglicher Energien in Form von Sonnen-, Wind- und Wasserenergie wie auch anderer reichlich vorhandener Formen natürlicher Energie – beitragen können. Die Wahrheit in einer Zeit wie der unseren offen darzulegen, ist ein mühseliges Unterfangen, aber Sie stehen mit Ihrem Bemühen, dieses Problem zu lösen, nicht allein. Auch wir sind daran interessiert, effektive Lösungen für kritische Probleme wie globale Erwärmung, schwindende Ressourcen, Überbevölkerung, Diskriminierung, Armut und Krieg zu finden, die alle Menschen dieser Erde betreffen. Eine Vielzahl weiterer Menschen und Organisationen arbeiten auch in diesem Sinne (siehe die ‹Earth Charter Initiative› auf www. earthcharter.org), darunter Green Cross International. Diese Organisation, die 1992 von Michail Gorbatschow gegründet wurde, arbeitet ebenfalls daran, effektive Lösungen für Umweltprobleme zu finden und ist an der weltweiten Entwicklung nachhaltiger bzw. umweltverträglicher Energien aktiv beteiligt. Ihre US-Zweigorganisation, Global Green USA, engagiert sich derzeit sogar mit dem Bau bezahlbarer, energie-effizienter und umweltfreundlicher Häuser für die Opfer des Hurrikans Katrina (siehe greencrossinternational.net und globalgreen.org). In der Anlage zu diesem Brief befindet sich eine Kopie der ‹Earth Charter› (Erd-Charta) sowie ein interessantes Interview mit Brad Pitt über das oben erwähnte Projekt in New Orleans, zusammen mit einem kurzen Bericht über die Vorteile der nachhaltigen Entwicklung bzw. der Entwicklung umweltverträglicher Technologien dort für die Einwohner wie auch für die Umwelt. Ich muss sagen, Ihr Film und das obige Projekt wirkten inspirierend auf mich und unsere Studiengruppe. Es ist uns klar, dass dies erst ein Anfang ist, aber diese beispielhaften Initiativen beweisen, dass es möglich ist, im Kampf gegen die globale Erwärmung zu bestehen und eine gerechte, nachhaltige bzw. lebensfähige und friedliche globale Gemeinschaft aufzubauen – wenn wir uns vereinen und als eine globale Familie zusammenarbeiten.		\| Mit diesem Brief wende ich mich an Sie im Namen einer FIGU-Studiengruppe in München/Deutschland. 	\| Last but not least, we fully agree with a very important point you made in your film with regard to our rapidly growing global population and the effect it has on global warming. It is only common sense that a growing population consumes more energy, which in turn increases the ~~CO<sub>2</sub>~~ emission and intensifies the green-house effect. Needless to say, a growing ‹overpopulation› accelerates this process. So in order to win the struggle against global warming, we must stop our global population growth through an effective program of global birth control and bring our planetary population count back into balance with nature, which for a planet the size of Earth is about 0.5 billion or more precisely 529 million (see 'Stirbt unser blauer Planet?' by Heinz Haber and ‹Social Issues› at us.figu.org). Such a measure, by the way, would also reduce all other problems we currently face – whether social, economic or environmental – to a size that we could deal with far more effectively. To accomplish this, however, it is necessary to raise public awareness – via lectures and other forms of public communication – with respect to the cause of this problem, the effects it has on our planet and humanity and how we can resolve it. Education and insight, combined with the appropriate measures and legislation, are undoubtedly the best means of resolving this and other problems we face as a global humanity. For this reason, it would be desirable, if courses dealing with environmental and other human-related problems were made a standard part of every school curriculum. Moreover, schools in general should be opened to the public for lifelong learning, so that people of all ages and from all walks of life can learn to effectively deal with the problems they face in life. 	\| Nicht zuletzt sind wir völlig einer Meinung in einem besonders wichtigen Punkt, der in Ihrem Film zur Sprache kommt, nämlich bezüglich der schnellwachsenden Weltbevölkerung und den Auswirkungen auf die globale Klimaerwärmung. Jedem mit gesundem Menschenverstand ist es klar, dass eine stets wachsende Bevölkerungszahl immer mehr Energie verbraucht, was wiederum zu einer Steigerung der ~~CO<sub>2</sub>~~-Emission führt und letztendlich den Treibhauseffekt verstärkt. Dass eine stets wachsende ‹Überbevölkerung› diesen Vorgang beschleunigt, versteht sich von selbst. Um den Kampf gegen die globale Klimaerwärmung zu gewinnen, müsste daher dem Wachstum der globalen Bevölkerung durch ein effektives Programm der globalen Geburtenkontrolle Einhalt geboten und die Zahl der Menschen auf unserem Planeten wieder ins Gleichgewicht mit der Natur gebracht werden. Für einen Planeten von der Grösse der Erde beträgt diese Zahl in etwa 0,5 Milliarden Menschen oder genauer gerechnet 529 Millionen (siehe ‹Stirbt unser blauer Planet?› von Heinz Haber und ‹Soziale Fragen› auf http://us.figu.org). Eine solche Massnahme würde im weiteren alle anderen Probleme, mit denen wir heute zu kämpfen haben – seien sie sozialer, wirtschaftlicher oder ökologischer Natur –, auf ein Mass reduzieren, bei dem sie weitaus effektiver zu lösen wären. Um dies jedoch zu erreichen ist es nötig, das öffentliche Bewusstsein durch Vorträge und weitere Formen der öffentlichen Kommunikation für die Ursachen dieses Problems und dessen Auswirkungen auf den Planeten und die Menschheit sowie für entsprechende Lösungsmöglichkeiten zu wecken. Erziehung und Einsicht, verbunden mit geeigneten Massnahmen und einer entsprechenden Gesetzgebung, sind zweifellos die besten Mittel, um dies und andere Probleme, die uns als globale Menschheit betreffen, in den Griff zu bekommen. Aus diesem Grund wäre es wünschenswert, wenn Lehrgänge und Kurse über Umweltfragen und weitere Probleme, die die Menschheit betreffen, zum festen Bestandteil eines jeden Schul- und Lehrprogramms gehörten. Des weiteren sollten Schulen grundsätzlich für ALLE zum Zweck lebenslangen Lernens frei zugänglich sein, damit Menschen jeden Alters und aus allen Schichten und Berufen lernen können, wie sie die Probleme effektiv bewältigen können, vor die sie im Leben gestellt werden. 	\| An effective system of global democracy in turn would require yet another form of human progress, namely lasting world peace, which contrary to common belief could indeed be achieved, if universal values that unite humanity and promote world peace were taught in our schools and demonstrated in our social behaviour, and also with the help of a multinational peace-fighting corps composed of several million peace-fighters from all nations of the world, whose task it would be to secure and safeguard world peace. The members of such a peace-fighting corps must be highly trained specialists in defence, peace-making, peace-keeping and the protection of human life and must be deployed over the entire planet in order to nip all wars and violent uprisings as well as all criminal and terrorist activities in the bud within 72 hours. Such a corps, however, must be strictly and exclusively controlled by the world population under the guidance of wise, experienced and capable leaders (see "Multinational Peace-Fighting Troops and World Peace" by Barbara Harnisch and Billy in the attachment to this mail). The development of such a global defence force would therefore require a well-informed and socially responsible global population and a genuine government of the people in all countries of the world, which in turn must be accompanied by the development of easily accessible and absolutely safe systems of electronic voting worldwide to enable all citizens of Earth to actively participate in government decisions at local, state, national and global levels by voting directly on all issues affecting them and the rest of humanity. As you can see, dear Mr. Gore, we all have a lot of work ahead of us, but then again the time is ripe for change.
